*** Gutenberg! The Musical! is simply the best musical ever written***

In this two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their new project: A big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg (not Steve Guttenberg, who invented Johnny Five from the cinema classic Short Circuit). With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them a Broadway contract – fulfilling their ill-advised dreams.

“Gutenberg! The Musical! holds a mirror up to humanity and reflects its problems, foibles, shortcomings and, hopefully guides humankind to changes for the better,” said director and Associate Artist John Sadowsky. “ ‘Doug and Bud’ see the Broadway musical as a vehicle for Earth-shaking social and behavioral change.”

Gutenberg! The Musical! was recently nominated for the 2007 Lucille Lortel Award for “Outstanding Musical” and for "Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical" by the Outer Critics Circle. The play also won the 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival “Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre Writing (Book).”

“A smashing success!” writes Jason Zinoman of the New York Times. “Scott Brown and Anthony King are superb comic writers. GUTENBERG! proves that two actors and a cloakroom full of hats can stand up to anything choreographed by Susan Stroman.” New York Magazine writes “Scott Brown and Anthony King's book and lyrics deliver laughs so consistently, Gutenberg! is funnier than it has any right to be. Brilliantly realized and side-splitting!"

Landless’ production will feature brothers Andrew and Matt Baughman in the roles of “Bud and Doug.” The Baughman brothers are founding artists of Landless Theatre Company, and they last appeared together in critically acclaimed performances as monster brothers “Godzilla” and “Mothra” in the 2006 production of Yasuhiko Ohashi’s Godzilla.

“Sure, Gutenberg! is a comedy, but it also resonates on a deeply personal level for the Baughman brothers,” said Matt Baughman. “Most people think this play is about Steve Guttenberg, the actor – they don’t even know who Johann Gutenberg was… well, no one knows who we are, either. And that hurts, man. ”

“But all that is about to change!” adds Andrew Baughman.

Artistic Bios and Production Staff for Gutenberg! The Musical!:

The Cast: Andrew Lloyd Baughman (“Bud”) and Matt Baughman (“Doug”)

The Internationally Unknown Baughman Brothers last appeared onstage together in the Landless premiere production of Ohashi's Godzilla, playing "monster brothers" Godzilla and Mothra. Washington Post Critic Nelson Pressley wrote "The Baughmans play their mannerly monsters with refined charm and laughable fits of pique. They are the strongest elements in the show." Many other critics and audience members have similarly found them "laughable."

The Baughman Brothers are both founding artists of The Landless Theatre Company, and company members of Frederick's Maryland Ensemble Theatre. Andrew Baughman began his career as a musical theatre actor, but didn't look good enough in a wife-beater to earn a living without supplementary income as a director, playwright and teacher. He most recently directed the DC premiere of A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant, a play so successful for Landless that Andrew is starting to think L Ron might have been on to something. Matt Baughman came VERY CLOSE to being onstage at The Studio Theatre (he worked in the administrative offices), and last appeared in Tracy Letts' Killer Joe at Maryland Ensemble Theatre.

In addition to Gutenberg! The Musical!, the Baughman Brothers celebrate their German ancestry in an original two-man children's play entitled The Brothers Grimm Excellent Adventure, which has been playing to standing-room-only houses of third graders from DC to Pittsburgh since 2006. The Baughmans feel that not enough German-Americans celebrate their cultural heritage, and that there's a very good reason for that.

THE BROTHERS GRIMM EXCELLENT ADVENTURE
by Andrew Lloyd Baughman and directed by Melissa Baughman
for two shows at the Black Box Theatre, May 10 and 24, 2008

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are washed up! After centuries of glory as the distinguished writers of Cinderella, Rumplestilskin and other fairy tale classics, they are now overshadowed by Harry Potter, Spongebob Squarepants, and Star Wars!

In a daring effort to reclaim their literary place in pop culture, the Brothers are coming to America to put on a show so spectacular… so amazing… so fantastic that the multitudes will stand up and cheer!

One problem: it hasn't been written yet!

Join Jacob and Wilhelm as they write a play about writing a story, featuring fabulous two-man re-enactments of Grimm classics "Little Red Riding Hood," "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs," "The Frog Prince" and more. Young audiences learn about structure and elements of fiction writing, and get the opportunity to write a brand new fairy tale with the Brothers. Lots of audience interaction, music and fun! Every show is different!

The Brothers Grimm Excellent Adventure received a successful first workshop production by The Fun Company in Frederick, MD. The play features real life brothers Andrew and Matt Baughman.
